Artist Talk Esther Kokmeijer

Esther Kokmeijer richt zich in haar werk als kunstenaar vooral op de wereldwijd gedeelde natuurlijke bronnen van de aarde: de oceanen, de atmosfeer, het heelal en Antarctica, de zogenaamde ‘Global Commons’.

Ze is geïnteresseerd in de wereld als geheel en de verbindingen en bewegingen daarbinnen. Dit komt voort uit een drang om de (natuurlijke) fenomenen van de wereld op macro- en microniveau te ontdekken, ordenen en verbeelden. Ze reist daardoor veel. Kokmeijer werkt in verschillende media: naast fotografie en film maakt ze installaties en interventies en schrijft ze boeken. Binnenkort zal ze een tijdschrift uitgeven dat geheel gewijd is aan Antarctica en waarin kunst en wetenschap worden samengebracht.

In haar lezing bij de Pennings Foundation zal ze zich vooral richten op dit tijdschrift en haar werk op en over Antarctica. Esther Kokmeijer (Dokkum, 1977) is beeldend kunstenaar, fotograaf en ontdekkingsreiziger, momenteel woonachtig in Rotterdam en werkzaam wereldwijd. Ze studeerde grafisch ontwerpen op ArtEz in Kampen. In 2013 volgde ze de minor Arctische en Antarctische wetenschappen aan het Arctisch Centrum van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

In her work as an artist, Esther Kokmeijer focuses mainly on the worldwide shared natural resources of the earth: the oceans, the atmosphere, the universe and Antarctica, the so-called ‘Global Commons’.

She is interested in the world as a whole and the connections and movements within it. This stems from an urge to discover, arrange and imagine the (natural) phenomena of the world at a macro and micro level. She therefore travels a lot. Kokmeijer works in various media: in addition to photography and film, she makes installations and interventions and writes books. She will soon be publishing a magazine devoted entirely to Antarctica, bringing together art and science.

In her lecture at the Pennings Foundation she will mainly focus on this magazine and her work on and about Antarctica.

Esther Kokmeijer (Dokkum, 1977) is a visual artist, photographer and explorer, residing in Rotterdam and working around the globe. She studied graphic design at the ArtEz Institute of Arts in Kampen and in 2013 she did the minor Arctic and Antarctic Studies at the Arctic Centre at the University of Groningen.
