Family Stranger

Wat als de persoon die je het meest vertrouwt, in de gevangenis belandt? Het is moeilijk voor te stellen dat een familielid een misdrijf zou plegen. Family Stranger is een fotoserie over familieleden van gedetineerden, die plotseling worden geconfronteerd met ethische vragen die hun relaties onder grote druk zetten. In een lang proces van her-evaluatie zullen de gezinsleden hun relatie met hun crimineel familielid moeten beoordelen en beslissen of ze al dan niet kunnen leven met wat zij hebben gedaan. Terwijl het leven van deze gezinnen voortduurt, komt de gedetineerde in de gevangenis in een soort tijdcapsule terecht.

Het doel van Family Stranger is om bewustzijn te creëren voor de strijd die deze gezinnen doorstaan. Net als het criminele familielid wordt ook het gezin vaak sociaal veroordeeld, met een risico op (verdere) afzondering van de samenleving. Daarom ervaren zowel volwassenen als kinderen het onderwerp als taboe, of vinden het in ieder geval erg moeilijk om er over te praten. Wiosna van Bon (NL) laat met dit project de verschillende manieren zien waarop families met de situatie omgaan.

Voorafgaand aan de lezing van Gerdien Wolthaus Paauw op woensdag 7 juli, zal Wiosna van Bon kort vertellen over haar project Family Stranger.

Wiosna van Bon (1992) is een Nederlands-Poolse fotograaf en woont in Den Bosch. In 2017 studeerde zij af aan de KABK in Den Haag. Zij heeft een grote interesse in psychologie.

Family Stranger 

What if the person you trusted the most ends up in prison? It is hard to imagine that a close relative would commit a crime. Family Stranger is a photographic series of the families of detainees, who are suddenly confronted with ethical questions that put their relationships under great pressure. In a long process of re-evaluation, the family members will have to assess their relationship with their criminal relative and decide whether or not they can live with what they have done.  
While the lives of these families continue, the detainee enters a kind of time capsule, being imprisoned.

The purpose of Family Stranger is to create awareness for the struggles that these families endure. Just like the criminal relative, the family is often socially convicted as well, with a risk of (further) seclusion from society. Therefore, both adults and children experience the topic as taboo, or at least find it very difficult to talk about. With this work, 

Wiosna van Bon shows the various ways in which families deal with the situation.

Wiosna van Bon (1992) is a Dutch-Polish photographer and lives in Den Bosch. In 2017 she graduated from the KABK in The Hague. She has a great interest in psychology.
