'Reality is the new fiction' 

Hoewel velen het nog steeds geloven, heeft fotografie nooit echt de waarheid kunnen tonen; fotografie is vanuit nature subjectief en heeft te maken met vele vervormingen en leunt op een beeldgeschiedenis die niet mondiaal is. Fotografie is een feest, maar is ook terechtgekomen in een draaikolk van veranderingen en technologische ontwrichtingen. En nu komen daar de duizelingwekkend snelle ontwikkelingen van Artificial intelligence (AI) over heen. Lars Boering neemt je mee door een geschiedenis van fotografie, technologische ontwikkelingen en laat je nadenken over AI en beeld. 

Wat kunnen we of moeten we nog geloven? Is fotografie in staat overeind te blijven nu we niet meer weten wat we zien en/of geloven? Niet op zoek naar de waarheid die er niet is in fotografie, maar op zoek naar betrouwbare informatie in een wereld waar niets is wat het lijkt, en zelfs dat niet.

Lars Boering (1969) studeerde o.a. politieke wetenschappen en communicatiewetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij is adviseur fotografie, docent, verzamelaar en consultant. Hij is directeur van het European Journalism Centre en oprichter van Triggertale.com, een platform voor visuele communicatie en storytelling. Hij is de initiatiefnemer van beroepsvereniging DuPho en talkshow 'De donkere Kamer'. Van 2015 tot 2021 leidde hij de World Press Photo Foundation en heeft deze omgevormd tot een organisatie die nu meer is dan een wedstrijd. Momenteel is hij lid van de werkgroep die een mondiaal handvest voor kunstmatige intelligentie voor de journalistiek ontwerpt en definieert.

Although many still believe it, photography has never really been able to show the truth; photography is by nature subjective and has to deal with many distortions and relies on a picture history that is not global. Photography is a joy but has also ended up in a vortex of changes and technological disruptions. And now the dizzyingly fast developments of Artificial intelligence (AI) are coming on top of that. Lars Boering takes you through a history of photography, technological developments and makes you think about AI and images. 

What can we, or should we, still believe? Is photography able to survive now that we no longer know what we see and/or believe? Not looking for the truth that is not there in photography, but looking for reliable information in a world where nothing is what it seems, and not even that. 

Lars Boering (1969) studied Political science and Communication sciences at Amsterdam University. He is an advisor on photography, teacher, collector and consultant. He is the Director of the European Journalism Centre and is founder of Triggertale.com, a platform for visual communication and storytelling. He has brought together all professional photographers in DuPho and created the talk show 'De donkere Kamer'. From 2015 till 2021 he led World Press Photo Foundation and has transformed it into an organization that is now more than a contest. Currently he is a member of the working group that is designing and defining a global Artificial intelligence charter for journalism.
