Tinder, nanodeeltjes en criminele netwerken

Documentair fotograaf Jos Jansen publiceerde onlangs zijn zesde fotoboek: ‘This is not about pigeons’, een boek over de doordringende algoritmen van de digitale platformeconomie. Jansen is gefascineerd door wat hij de ‘belangrijkste uitdaging voor de moderne fotografie’ noemt: het verbeelden van het onzichtbare. Sinds we namelijk niet alleen in een fysieke context leven maar ook in een digitale, is veel om ons heen onzichtbaar geworden.

Maar hoe visualiseer je als fotograaf de algoritmen van Tinder en Amazon? Of onzichtbare criminele netwerken? Om maar niet te spreken van de sporen die onze smart phones achterlaten in de virtuele wereld.

In deze lezing vertelt Jansen aan de hand van een aantal recente, fascinerende projecten over zijn specifieke werkwijze en hoe zijn beelden resulteren in fotoboeken, exposities en video-installaties. Veel van zijn werk gaat over onze relatie met wetenschap en technologie met als achterliggende vraag: zijn we nog wel in control?

Aan de orde komen onder meer: biotechnologie, algoritmen, digitale platforms (zoals Tinder, Uber en Amazon) en digitale verslaving. Hij vertelt onder andere over zijn boeken Seeds, Battlefields en Universe (waarvoor Robbert Dijkgraaf de inleiding schreef). Tenslotte zal hij iets laten zien van ‘Point Clouds’. In dit nieuwe project heeft hij met zgn 3D-LiDar scanner, die gebruikt wordt door o.a. zelfrijdende auto’s, de coronacrisis gevisualiseerd.

Jos Jansen (1950) studeerde psychologie en daarna documentaire fotografie en film aan academie St. Joost in Breda. Hij woont in Waalre. Naast documentaire fotografie en film gebruikt hij in zijn projecten big data, found footage en 3D-Lidar.

Zijn werk werd recent gepubliceerd en geëxposeerd in binnen- en buitenland. Zijn fotoboeken (zie hierboven) werden geselecteerd als ‘best of’ door de Volkskrant en genomineerd door het fotofestival in Arles. www.josjansenphotography.com

Documentary photographer Jos Jansen recently published his sixth photo book: 'This is not about pigeons', a book about the pervasive algorithms of the digital platform economy. Jansen is fascinated by what he calls the 'most important challenge for modern photography': imagining the invisible. Since we live not only in a physical context but also in a digital one, much around us has become invisible.

But how to visualize the algorithms of Tinder and Amazon as a photographer? Or invisible criminal networks? Not to mention the traces that our smart phones leave behind in the virtual world.

In this lecture, Jansen tells about his specific working method and how his images result in photo books, exhibitions and video installations on the basis of a number of recent, fascinating projects. Much of his work is about our relationship with science and technology with the underlying question: are we still in control?

Topics include: biotechnology, algorithms, digital platforms (such as Tinder, Uber and Amazon) and digital addiction. He talks about his books Seeds, Battlefields and Universe (for which Robbert Dijkgraaf wrote the introduction). Finally, he will show something from 'Point Clouds'. In this new project, he has visualized the corona crisis with a so-called 3D-LiDar scanner, which is used by, among other things, self-driving cars.
